I fixed this problem by removing (and purging) the fglrx drivers that I
had installed from AMD's site.  Then I reinstalled the Ubuntu's default
fglrx drivers.

But on reboot, I had no login screen because somewhere during the
upgrade, the kdm login manager became uninstalled.  After reinstalling
kdm . . . everything worked.

As Brian noted, the xorg-edgers-ppa is a problem.  (I think that ppa
also replaces the default fglrx drivers)

  Though Kubuntu 13.10 is released but during upgrade it shows an error
  "Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred
  while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by: * Upgrading to
  pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release of
  Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu If none
  of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
  'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-code' in a terminal."
