What is the output of:

$ ubuntu-drivers list

?

We use Modaliases stanza on the package to figure out if your hardware needs it.
Could you also do:

$ lspci

And then lookup modalias for your card in:
$ cat /sys/devices/pci*/*$(DEVICE)/modalias

Title:
  'Install 3rd party software' does not install proper drivers for
  Nvidia Geforce GTX 580

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  To run the installer on a machine with an Nvidia Geforce GTX 580
  graphics card it is necessary to use the 'nomodeset'-option. After
  installation, Unity runs slowly and in a very low resolution. This can
  be fixed by installing the nvidia-current package.

  I asked on the ubiquity irc chat about this, and the response was that
  this is a bug, hence this bug report.
