Public bug reported:

The package grub-efi-amd64 fails to configure itself. The root cause is 'update-grub', which fails with exit code 1.
However it only fails when my external drive is connected, a WD My Book 1130 (3 TB pure-4k drive, i.e. no 512 B sector emulation).

I researched further and found that it only fails when my OS X 10.9
(currently at Developer Preview 8) system partition (HFS+) is mounted.
If I unmount this HFS+ partition, update-grub finishes successfully.

Output with OS X Mavericks partition on pure 4k drive mounted:

I don't know how to get more debug output from update-grub.
