You have an unclean installation medium containing unofficial packages.
Please format the usb stick before using it to install Ubuntu.

Title:
installer crashes trying to overwrite something, both on fresh install
  and upgrading from 13.10

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I first tried installing the daily build over my installation of
13.10, but it failed saying that it couldn't overwrite /etc/console-
setup/compose.VISCII.inc , and then I rebooted and tried again, this
time installing it fresh and it crashed at the same spot.

  /var/log/syslog:

  /var/log/partman:
  http://pastebin.com/e71Ww7i1

It may help to know that partition sda1 is/was my current installation
of Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 with the home folder, and I just recently copied
my home folder to sda3 to use as my separate home folder partition,
while sda2 is and always has been used for swap.
