Mutt can talk directly with a smtp server (smtp_url configuration
option) which I think makes unnecesary to force the user to install a
local mta. In my personal opinion mutt default-mta should be optional.

This page shows that http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/mutt depends on default-mta(which is provided by postfix).
  How about a more light-weight mta ?
