In addition to the logs - a note.
When I upgraded with the image I got the name of the original user wrong
- so now I have /home/elfy that I can log into, the old home folder
/home/hob appears to be completely empty.
Good job I added the logs from the live session rather than boot.
elfy at elfy-VirtualBox:~$ sudo -i
[sudo] password for elfy:
root at elfy-VirtualBox:~# ls /home
elfy hob
root at elfy-VirtualBox:~# cd /home/hob
root at elfy-VirtualBox:/home/hob# ls
root at elfy-VirtualBox:/home/hob# ls -al

Title:
Upgrade from image prompts creating a new user
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
Triaged
Bug description:
When performing an upgrade from the "image" (boot up the ISO) to
Xubuntu 13.04, the installer prompts to create a new user.
Is this expected behaviour when performing an OS upgrade? Shouldn't
the installer simply keep existing users?
Entering the same username and password as what is currently on the
system works.
