Public bug reported:

I was updating my system from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04. Unfortunately, the
upgrade process failed stating that the system could be in an unusable
state.

Afterwards launching update-manager again, I was offered to perform a partial upgrade. Yet it failed too, stating
"Can't install 'ubuntu-desktop'
It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug using 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal". So, here it goes.

Meanwhile, in the terminal ubuntu-manager had the following output:
"Starting pkgProblemResolver with broken count: 1
Starting 2 pkgProblemResolver with broken count: 1
Investigating (0) ubuntu-desktop [ amd64 ] < 1.325 > ( metapackages )
Broken ubuntu-desktop:amd64 Depends on ubuntu-session [ amd64 ] < none -> 3.9.90-0ubuntu12 > ( gnome )
  Considering ubuntu-session:amd64 1 as a solution to ubuntu-desktop:amd64 0
  Removing ubuntu-desktop:amd64 rather than change ubuntu-session:amd64
Done"
