Thanks to all the feedback. I followed the instructions for reverting to
official Xorg packages and the upgrade completed successfully.

  Could not calculate the upgrade: Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04

Status in “ubuntu-release-upgrader” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Tried to upgrade from 13.10 to 14.04 using the Software Updater. Each
  time I receive the following error:

  Could not calculate the upgrade

  An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

   This can be caused by:
   * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
   * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

  If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
  'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

  I have tried to disable the 3rd party software repositories but that
  doesn't seem to help.
