Stop marking it as invalid.
As you can clearly see, by the amount of users affected, its is a problem.
Its not that complicated. Since the dawn of time it worked a certain way but all of a sudden with 14.04 it does not work anymore as it used to.
If something changed, thats all fine but the update process has to handle that, for example. run the dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc during upgrade, all would be fine. Currently this is not the case which is a *Bug* and it breaks users systems.
You can NOT make users anticipate that change.
How you keep marking it as invalid and leave possible a lot of users
with a broken system is beyond me. You are not being helpful.

Title:
Ubuntu 14.04 Update breaks grub, resulting in "error: symbol
'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
The update from 13.10 to 14.04 via update-manager broke grub for me,
which resulted in the grub error:
"symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found"
on startup.
To fix the problem I had to boot to my persisting Ubuntu installation
(e.g. using Super Grub Disk) and had to reinstall grub on my boot
partition: "sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sdx"
