This problem happens on a laptop with AMD E2  processor and video, it
did not happen on desktops with Intel processors.

Therefore the direction for resolvig this should look at what id
different in AMD from Intel.

  I have asked the question many times, last was in Launchpad #258578

  This happens in both 14.04.1 and 14.10

  Upgrade appears to run without errors, but upon boot after password
  entry only a blank screen wth "Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is presented.
