I've got the right permissions in the host OS to access the disk (group floppy).

  Trying to install Ubuntu 64 bit 14.04 on a badly messed up laptop by
  putting its HDD into a USB caddy and then running qemu (with KVM
  enabled) on the ISO:

  qemu-system-x86_64 -boot -order=dc -enable-kvm -hda /dev/sde -m 1024
  -cdrom ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso -cpu host

  sde is a 512G physical disk.
