It isn't really that complicated.  There is a plus button to add
partitions, and you click on each listed partition and can set where
it should be mounted, what filesystem type it should have, and choose
to format it or not ( if it already has that type ).  The normal setup
is to have one partition of type swap, and one partition of type ext4,
mounted as the root directory ( / ).  Some people like to have a
smaller root partition and most of the space separate and mounted in
/home.

  AFter trying out Ubuntu from a USB stick, I clicked on Ïnstall Ubuntu
  14.04.1 and during install (possibly while installing grub) it
