Thank you for your response.
I am not sure what happened. I used a 8 GB microSD-card in an 
USB-adapter. The first time I created the bootable card with Rufus, from 
the 14.10 64-bit desktop ISO-file.

After your response I recreated the card from the same ISO file with 
Win32DiskImager. The source file's md5 sum was correct.
I didn't know how to check the contents on the card so it was not 
checked. Where is the "check disc" option? I got the same error again, 
in the ubiquity module.

I then used the same card+adapter and created a bootable Linux Mint from 
an ISO-file using Win32DiskImager, and it installed without problems.

My conclusion is not certain.
The downloaded Ubuntu image had the correct md5 sum.
The installation medium worked with another ISO file.
