You need to install grub to the mbr ( sda ), not an individual
partition.
** Package changed: ubiquity (Ubuntu) => grub2 (Ubuntu)
** Changed in: grub2 (Ubuntu)

Title:
64-bit ubuntu 11.10 cannot install boot loader on XFS system '/'
partition.
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Installing 64-bit Ubuntu 11.10 on first partition of three '/', 500GB
disk with 3 equally sized partitions, first 2 are XFS, 3rd is swap.
Installation fails because it cannot install the boot loader on that
partition. Another bug reported that XFS does not provide room for
boot loader. If this is the cause, alert installer chose a different
file system that can accept a boot loader.
When fat32 was selected for second partition that failed as well,
maybe a size limitation, sorry I didn't look that up.
When first partition was ext4, installation completed and was able to
re-boot.
After some reading, I'm not trying to dual boot, so are either grub or
lilo needed? I use my BIOS CMOS settings to select drive boot order
and any number of tools can change active partition settings.
I'll keep trying various configurations.
Intel DH67GD with core i7 CPU.
Installer says it will automatically attach log files. I'm still new
to Linux and it has been over 15 years since I used any Unix systems.
