This was fixed several years ago by avoiding the use of the
broken/depreciated libparted ext2 code.

Title:
[jaunty alpha3] the live-installer partioning doesn't work at all
after doing complex setup with gparted

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  I downloaded jaunty-dvd-i386.iso dated 20090203.

I use 3 sata disks in my box.
The first disk has Windows XP, /boot (grub 0.97), swap and Ubuntu 8.10.
I try to install Jaunty on /dev/sdb2 (boot) and /dev/sdb6 (root).
I will also install Ubuntu 8.10 on /dev/sdb1 (boot) and /dev/sdb5 (root).
I will also install another configuration of Ubuntu 8.10/9.04 for development in sdb3 and sdb7

I booted the live DVD and used Gparted to partition /dev/sdb (SATA 400 GB) in 9 partitions.
I will boot-chain from the /dev/sda2 onto the primary partitions on sdb disk.

I booted the jaunty live-dvd and partitioned sdb with ext2 and ext3 file system.
Once finished I proceeded installing the program.
In the partitioning stage, I chose the manual operation.
  I select /boot (sdb2), / (sdb6), /cache (sdb8), /data (sdb9) without formatting.
The configuration is using swap at sda3.

  I cannot proceed installation!

By clicking the foward button, the installation program displays this
  message.

  ---
File system has an incompatible feature enabled. Compatible features are has_journal, dir_index, filetype, sparse_super and large_file. Use tune2fs or debugfs to remove features.
  ----

I click Cancel and try to mark the check boxes for formatting. The
system doesn't allow me to check the dialog boxes.

I click again the forward button. The installation program displays
  this message.

  -----
No root file system is defined.

Please correct this from the partitioning menu.
  -----

I click on the delete partition button.

  The message is:
  ------
Partman failed with exit code 141. Further information may be found in /var/log/syslog. Do you want to try running this step again before continuing? If you do not, your installation may fail entirely or may be broken.
  ------

I included the syslog file to the report.

I cannot install Ubuntu from the graphical interface of the live DVD.
  I'll try the textmode installation.
