OKay. Booted up on the 3.8 kernel (with BURG).
Everything seems fine.
I guess we can close this ticket but we probably need to let burg users know that even if they are not using GrUB, it still needs to be installed for this issue to resolve and the maintainers of whatever was causing this needs to know that not all users have GrUB installed.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

Is LILO an issue with this? Does anyone still use LILO? What other
bootloaders will cause an issue if GrUB is not also installed? After
doing kernel upgrades and they run updates on GrUB, do we still have to
run update-burg or whatever bootloader we use? (I did not know if I had
to but I did to make sure).
