Never mind. Looked at the apt.log, which was filled with garbage, and
realized it was some old packages that were the same version as the
Ubuntu ones only with "git[some other stuff]" as the version. Tracked
them all down in Synaptic and forced the official versions (a
"downgrade").

Ran d-release-upgrade and now it's working.

It really shouldn't be this hard. I think an average user shouldn't have
to deal with this, but I guess an average user wouldn't be using xorg
PPAs in the first place, so.... whatever.

The good news is that it's working.

  I've been trying for months and always get the same error that may be
  caused by using a pre-release or unapproved packages. This is a VERY
  old install (started at 8.04) so things are a little crazy, but I
  don't even know how to troubleshoot this issue...
