Looking at the log files it seems that you are running a version of
unity from a PPA and this is causing upgrade issues.

Investigating (0) unity [ amd64 ] < 7.1.3+minimize5 > ( gnome )

This is where the package was built:

https://launchpad.net/~zxcq14/+archive/minimize-unity-7/+build/5796557

You'll want to use the standard version of unity for the release
upgrader to work.
