Thank you for the quick reply.

I had in fact created a new partition table on that usb and made a new
partition before burning the iso, but something must have gone wrong or
perhaps there is another problem with that usb.

I reformatted a different usb for the installer and this time the
install succeeded without problems.

Bug report resolved.
