I'm fairly certain the 3rd party software comes from the Internet.

>From UbiquitySyslog we can see the following:

Mar 28 16:05:08 ubuntu-gnome in-target: Fetched 20,1 MB in 10min 26s
(32,2 kB/s)

So it certainly does seem to be a slow connection.

Title:
ubiquity appears to have hung on "selecting third party software" and
  a slow Internet connection

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When installing using a slow Internet connection and selecting third
party software, the installer appears to have hung. It can be waiting
for a long time when you press next just after this page.

If you use the same option without the Internet connected, the
installer continues directly when you press next.

There is no progress bar and you don't know what it is doing.

It doesn't need the Internet connection here!
