Public bug reported:
Trying to install 14.04 (ISO downloaded from Ubuntu website) in parallel
with Ubuntu 13.10.
Before using 14.04 install DVD, I moved lots of large files to a spare
external disk, then backed up the home directory to external drive as I
usually do regularly. The intention was to shrink 13.10 and install
14.04 in parallel to allow the long process of transition of data before
replacing the 13.10 installation with Debian.
Booted the DVD & selected install option, but there was no option to
shrink the 13.10 installation which covers the whole disk (1TB -
Actually 2x 1TB disks in a motherboard hardware RAID 1).
Quit out of installation, ran gparted from Live Ubuntu 14.04 and shrunk
13.10 partition to approx 500GB (probably my first mistake!). Rebooted
into 13.10 to check it still worked - it booted fine to desktop.
Booted DVD again and tried to install 14.04 in the now unallocated space
alongside 13.10, but after confirming Copenhagen as where I am, got a
dialogue with the helpful message of "?? ??" and jumped back to the
start with the only option for a guided installation to erase 13.10.
As I have a backup, and I may have made a mistake in shrinking 13.10, I
decided to do this. However, all I get is the same "?? ??" and get stuck
in a loop.
