The symptoms you describe (and that are described in the linked forum
discussion) point to a problem with the kernel graphics handling.
Reassigning to the kernel.

Title:
boot appears hung after switching display
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
The swap partition fails to initialise and causes the boot process to
hang on the server version of 14.04. This error is unrecoverable, on
num-lock and CTRL-ALT-DEL seem to work, no other terminal is
accessible through keyboard combinations.
I have wiped the partitions and reinstalled and have had a running
version of the desktop on the same drive.
