[Bug 1316910] [NEW] Reading package lists... Error!

Public bug reported:

Just recently cleaned my system using the Janitor in Ubuntu Tweak after
a most recent update.  Had done apt-get clean before then.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 wubi installation release 12.04

I got a red "stop" warning on my menu bar and ran apt-get update which gave the error below:
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_multiverse_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Running: sudo apt-cache policy update-manager
Gave the same error:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_multiverse_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.


I tried using "ubuntu-bug' to report this but it could not find the package to report on.
