  [12.04 LTS] Reboot fails (hangs forever) after installation

Bug description:
  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 32bit on an old computer, from a bootable USB pendrive, created from a live CD iso image.
  The installation was succesfull. After finishing the installation, a message appeared that said something like: "Installation complete. You need to reboot to use Ubuntu on this computer". I clicked on the "restart" button. Then the rotating-circle animated cursor got frozen, and the system hanged forever (still showing the empty desktop, the "restart needed" message window, and the frozen waiting cursor). I waited several minutes but the reboot was never performed. At the end I forced the reboot by holding the power button.
  After that the system booted normally and everything worked fine. (well, except for Update Manager prompting to install some updates that it would itself refuse to install, but that's another bug).
