  kubuntu upgrade 13.10 to 14.04 failed "Could not calculate upgrade"

Status in “ubuntu-release-upgrader” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  I'm trying to upgrade my system from Kubuntu 13.10 to 14.04. It fails
  during the calculation of the upgrade with the error "Could not
  calculate the upgrade".

  I have another computer that I upgraded successfully from 13.10 to
  14.04.

  I removed any PPA sources that could be causing this issue, but still
  get the error. I removed a few special packages that I had installed
  manually (from deb files), but still get the error. I don't know what
  else to do, and I don't know where to find more information about what
  actually caused the failure (this general error message is not very
  helpful, if it would point me to a specific package or PPA, I could
  fix it myself, but it doesn't).
