expanding on comment#2, what seems to be happening is that the kernel
packages are left in an incomplete installation state, so dpkg always
exits with a non-zero code, and the installer sees the non-zero exit
code and bails.

this is likely a symptom of bug #1317602 and will go away once that bug
is fixed.
