[Bug 1320627] [NEW] sudo do-release-upgrade caused system to go text-terminal mode and upgrade failed.

Public bug reported:

In text-only mode there was no progress and upgrade hanged. When I
rebooted the machine kernel was not able to boot. I tried again with
older kernel (in grub menu) and it started fine. In command line mode I
ran dpkg manually and after that release upgrade went fine.
