[Bug 1323384] [NEW] Updating ubuntu 10.04 LTS to 12.04.4 LTS Failed

Public bug reported:

First experience with this SERVER update using the update-manager via
Putty connection to a very old laptop IBM running a few services nicely
2-3 years.  After 7 HOURS, the update falied.  Some services seem to
have survived (apache, DNS are running) but others aren't (e.g. dhcp and
I cannot manage it with Webmin).  Popfile survived AND was updated
cleanly (I think) and is running.  Webmin is sketchy and apt seems not
to be looking in the right places yet.  Enough is working that I can get
by, which is a surprise, but I am not that proficient that I trust
myself to fix the stuff and worry that I may lose my services and have
to build a new server after all this.

Anyway...after spending 7 hours watching the show, I find it unlikely I
will ever try another update with that tool.  So I will try to give you
what I have and maybe you can learn something from it and convince me to
try again at another time when I can afford that much.  I could have
just built a new server in this much time.

Good luck.  I appreciate your work, but this part of it needs help.
