Brian for this machine, I was able to fix the issue by removing each
conflicting item from /etc/init.d/. I thought I updated the bug report to
reflect that with a link to the thread that helped me.
But on my work machine, the upgrade didn't automatically appear. I used
do-release-upgrade -d and now that machine is completely destroyed. I
cannot even get it to drop into recovery mode.
This upgrade has been the worst by far of all the LTS.
This is a very serious reliability issue especially that I am too concerned
to do upgrades on all the other machines in the office. If this forces me
to have to take out paid tech support from Canonical it will be a very
serious matter considering costs incurred by force caused by product defect
created for public consumption. I'm am hedging revealing this issue to my
supervisor until I see some real fixes that will make the upgrade work.
In addition, if this becomes a trust issue that would cause additional work
hours to go back to testing upgrades before deployment, we will have to
seriously consider a different distribution.
I am very sorry to have to be so direct in this way. We've trusted Ubuntu
for 7 years.
Yours,
Bruce Wolfe
