You have two disk drives.  By default, grub is installed to /dev/sda,
which should be the first drive in the system, and the one your bios
boots from.  It failed to install because you removed all partitions
from that drive.  You either need to create at least one partition on
the drive, or choose to install it to /dev/sdb and make sure your bios
is configured to boot from that drive.

Bug description:
  I attempted to install Ubuntu 14.10 and the installation of the GRUB
  bootloader failed.  I tried to install the bootloader by hand though
  the terminal but got the error that "/cow" could not be found.
