Seems the problem was around here:
2014-11-19 18:11:27,519 DEBUG Marking 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade
2014-11-19 18:11:27,761 DEBUG blacklist expr '^postgresql-.*[0-9]\.[0-9].*' matches 'postgresql-9.3-postgis-2.1'
2014-11-19 18:11:27,762 DEBUG The package 'postgresql-9.3-postgis-2.1' is marked for removal but it's in the removal blacklist
2014-11-19 18:11:27,792 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'The package 'postgresql-9.3-postgis-2.1' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist.'
2014-11-19 18:11:27,794 DEBUG abort called

... makes things so much easier than to start purging ppa's and local
packages by chance

Title:
  No (useful) error message

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Updating from 14.04 to 14.10 update-manager stopped at 'Setting new
software channels' with a message about 'could not calculate the
upgrade' asking me to report a bug by doing 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-
release-upgrader-core' instead of providing *any* information where it
  failed.

Is there any way to get verbose output from the process? I mean some
people would prefer to look into the issue and would be able to fix it
on their own instead of using some bug report tool....

yay! now I saw the hint where to find the log in the guidelines for
reporting bugs.. how about just mentioning them in the error dialog?
  :-)
