Malcolm is right, this is a problem with the autohinter, not with the
manual hints.

Title:
  Hinting/Kerning: "plan" spacing mismatched

Status in “freetype” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Rendered in 24pt Regular

  Sample Glyphs:

  plan

  Description:

The "l" appears much closer to the "a" than to the "p". The problem is
especially apparent at size 24, but it also appeared at other sizes
  when going through them.

The problem appears to be with the "l" rather than the "p", and some
other trigrams produce spacings that seem a bit off as well. (See
  "ali" or "nlz" for example.)

  UA String:

  Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.11 (KHTML,
  like Gecko) Ubuntu/10.04 Chromium/9.0.562.0 Chrome/9.0.562.0
  Safari/534.11
