10.04 has reached end of life and is no longer supported; are you still
having this problem on a currently supported release?

Title:
grub fails to display important error messages (eg "the initrd is too
big") when booting from the menu
Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: grub
After installing Ubuntu, I got the dreaded "Kernel Panic - not
syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)" message.
I spent a long time trying to figure out what was wrong to no avail
until I tried manually entering all of the boot commands at the grub
command line. At that point, I got an error message saying "The
initrd is too big" which enabled me to solve the problem. It would
have saved a lot of time if grub had just printed the "The initrd is
too big" error message when it was booting from the menu instead of
silently ignoring it.
Ubuntu release: 10.04.1
grub version: 0.97-29ubuntu60
