Phillip, this bug is not a duplicate of bug #1302418.

#956412 is when ESP on USB.
#1302418 is when no ESP at all.

** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1302418
grub-installer should fall back to grub-pc instead of grub-efi when there is no EFI system partition

Title:
Ubiquity placed grubx64.efi on USB disk

Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Computer with EFI boot

  Before installing Ubuntu:
  - sda with 3 primary partitions occupied by Windows
  - sdb (1Go USB disk)

Here is the BootInfo after installing 11.10 :
  http://paste.ubuntu.com/884745

As you can see, Ubiquity installed Ubuntu on the 4th primary partition
(used as extended), but placed the /efi/ubuntu/grubx64.efi on sdb.

Problem: when the USB key is disconnected, Ubuntu will not boot.

If this behavior cannot be avoid (i guess /efi must be on the 1st
primary partition of any disk), i suggest Ubiquity should at least
warn the user that Ubuntu won't boot if the USB key is disconnected.

  Hope this helps.
