It appears that you chose to install grub to /dev/sdb1 and this is not
possible.  You need to install it to the default location of /dev/sda.

  The bvoot loader seemed to install on sda, but had no effect on the
  server 2012 booting alone.  I want to dual boot between the server and
  the desktop
