Title:
grub failue to boot a extensa 4210 in 8.10
Status in grub package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Binary package hint: grub
Description:
There is a ACER Extensa 4210 serial laptop. There was a Vista
installed until the owner decide to replace it with XP + Ubuntu. There
also a ACER recover system partition. So the patition table looks like
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System comment
/dev/sda1 1 1019 8185086 12 Compaq diagnostics NTFS for ACER recover system
/dev/sda2 * 1020 6118 40957717+ 7 HPFS/NTFS Windows XP
/dev/sda3 6119 9729 29005357+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 6119 6969 6835626 83 Linux Ubuntu /
/dev/sda6 6970 7151 1461883 82 Linux swap /Solaris Ubuntu swap
/dev/sda7 7152 9729 20707753 83 Linux Ubuntu /home
After installed Ubuntu to the system in the grub menu, it fails to
start and reports and error related to BIOS disk (I forgotten).
Because I installed a "GRUB4DOS" into the computer later, I can not
provide the exact error code now. However, the "GRUB4DOS" cannot solve
the problem. It reports:
Booting 'Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic'
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x3000, size=0x220cb0]
[Linux-initrd @0x1eeb3000, 0x7cc298 byes]
invalid compressed format (err=1)
--System halted
If I copy the kernel image and initrd to the sda1 patition and boot
them with GRUB4DOS, the system will reboot automatically with a
crashed screen (No readable information, just a piece of white block).
I think these files is corrupted.
By the way, the information about bzImage & initrd is not shown in the
original version of GRUB provided by Ubuntu 8.10, and I has never seen
corrupted screen with it.
