Hi again,

Sorry for the trouble, but I found out the cause of the error message.
I didn't realize there were log files to check.  Inside /var/log/dist-
upgrade/main.log, there is this message:

2015-01-07 23:21:28,887 ERROR Dist-upgrade failed: 'The package 'ubuntu-
gnome-desktop' is marked for removal but it is in the removal
blacklist.'

I uninstalled this package and the upgrade appears to be fine.  So,
there might be a conflict in terms of the ubuntu-gnome-desktop package?

  Hi,

  I'm trying to upgrade from 14.04.1 LTS to 14.10 and I'm getting this
  error message:

  Calculating the changes

  Calculating the changes

  Could not calculate the upgrade

  An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

  This can be caused by: 
  * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu 
  * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu 
  * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu 

  If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the 
  command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.

  As there are no further messages, I am unsure what I can do next.  I
  presume  there is something special about my installation that differs
  from everyone else?
