Summary: 
  GRUB was insalled to a device other than the requested Ubuntu installation target and the system would not boot.  Suggest verifying the target of GRUB install matches user expectation

Detail:
  During a fresh installation of Ubuntu 14.10 to an SSD I could not get the system to boot even though the installation itself had detected the SSD and proceeded without any issues.  There were no errors or text on boot, just a flashing cursor.

I reinstalled several times and kept having the same issue, trying
various iterations of BIOS settings  thinking that the problem must be
an interaction between BIOS and the new SSD (eg AHCI vs. ATA support
enabled etc etc).

On the last install I happened to notice that GRUB was being installed
to an internal SD card (an overlooked relic from when this machine was
used for Windows and the card was a ReadyBoost cache) even though Ubuntu
itself had been directed to install to the new SSD.   The system cannot
boot from this MMC device,

I removed the SD card and re-installed Ubuntu.  This time GRUB was
properly installed on the SSD and the system booted correctly.
