UPDATE: I found a workaround.
1) Hit CTRL/I on bootup to activate the RAID configuration interface. Deleted the RAID label, and disabled RAID.
2) Rebooted the system with the Ubuntu 14.04.1 CD and initiated installation on disk 'sda'.
3) Configured installation NOT to update awhile installing. Enabling that option somehow appear to cause me trouble (system could not find the OS on reboot).
