I have this issue too, running:
 Virtualbox  4.3.20 r96997
 Windows 8.1 Host (non-server)
 Xubuntu 14.10 Guest (linux 3.0.16-29-generic)

  Cannot enter passphrase with 14.10 in VM

Status in cryptsetup package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  With 14.10 running on VirtualBox, I cannot enter my passphrase. See
  the attached image clipped.png. Nothing happens no matter what I
  press. I have to hit reset, then I get a more text-based interface on
  the 2nd time around, which I can use. See attachment "text based.png".

  This 14.10 is a guest under VirtualBox 4.3.20. This also happened with
  4.3.18.

  14.04 works fine as a guest in the same VirtualBox  environments.
  Windows 8.1 x64 is the VirtualBox server.
