You misread the man page: -v is for verbose, -V is for version.

  'grub-install -v' does not provide version info

  Invalid

Bug description:
  grub-install -v should provide version info. The --version flag works
  fine, but the help indicates that the short -v should also do the same
  thing.

  Found on Amazon EC2 instance running ubuntu-
  trusty-14.04-amd64-server-20140416.1.manifest.xml (ami-1f958c76).

  ubuntu:~$ grub-install -v
  grub-install: info: executing modprobe efivars 2>/dev/null.
  grub-install: info: Looking for /sys/firmware/efi ...
  grub-install: info: ... not found. Looking for /proc/device-tree ...
  grub-install: info: ... not found.
  Installing for i386-pc platform.
  grub-install: error: install device isn't specified.

  ubuntu:~$ grub-install --version
  grub-install (GRUB) 2.02~beta2-9

  ubuntu:~$ lsb_release -a
  No LSB modules are available.
  Distributor ID:	Ubuntu
  Description:	Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
  Release:	14.04
  Codename:	trusty

  ubuntu:~$ dpkg -S grub-install
  grub2-common: /usr/sbin/grub-install
  grub2-common: /usr/share/man/man8/grub-install.8.gz
