I think this should be fixed by using the latest iso image. Please try
again with a new image and reply here if there is still an issue.

Bug description:
  Greetings.

  Fresh install - vivid-desktop-amd64.iso\
   made from linux live usb extractor onto a usb-stick 
      Had ownloaded from:    cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current

  
    was trying to get newer WxWdgets for BOINC.
  Created a new partion on disk so I could do a side-by-side.

  Had made old '/' as do not use
  used new alt-root for /

  I keep /var  and swap on a separate HD.

  got an error ealy on after the  format-the disk function.
  Sorry, I did not recognize the error - something about initializing.
  Hopefully in the report.

  I expected the install to complete.
  There was the initial error and the summary that it failed.
