It's just that ubuntu-desktop depends on unity which depends on
indicator-sound.

Title:
  ubuntu-desktop metapackage does not depend on indicator-sound

Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  A fresh install of Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 includes by default the
  package 'indicator-sound'.

  By definition, this should imply that the metapackage 'ubuntu-desktop'
  should have a dependency on 'indicator-sound', but it hasn't.
