You are using an EFI system, but you booted the Ubuntu installer in BIOS
mode.  You need to boot it in EFI mode.

  New "Patriot" 120 GB SSD, had text files written to it. Installer
  running default format and full install routine, stopped at "could not
  install boot sector" or something to that effect.
