  ubuntu upgrade crashes while calculating the upgrade

Status in update-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Update manager reports there is a new version of Ubuntu available for download - 11.10. When the upgrade begins, the update-manager handles the upgrade process nicely up to the point where it gets to the step "Downloading and installing the upgrades". The following error is then given during the "Calculation" portion of this step: ' Could not calculate the upgrade. A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by: *Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu, *Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu, *Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu.' Then it suggest to send a bug-report.
  I'm not running any pre-release versions and not trying to install it.
