You are using a fake raid setup, so the individual disks can/must not be
accessed directly. You need to install grub to the raid array instead (
/dev/mapper/isw_bifjihcbc_Volume0 ). Note also that fakeraid is not
well supported and should be avoided unless you must dual boot with
Windows.
** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu)

Title:
will not create /boot
Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
executing grub-install/dev/sda failed ...i have a sony vaio vpcz1290x
with 2 64gb ssd, its a few years old but solid until W7 crashed and
burned took everything with, since then have been using ubuntu 14.04.1
and mint17.1 only as a live cd, and i can see in bios that the drives
are working. tried partitioning the drives which whould cause the
installer to freeze with a comment box full of ??? ??? ??? ???
but i have yet to have the install complete successfully. i
partitioned 63mb to /boot 8gb to swap 15gb to /root and the remainder
to /home but the installer gets stuck there. i am fairly certain i am
doing something wrong. i really would like to install any os that
works
