Since nothing is happening with this bug, I created my own icedtea
packages for openjdk8, based on the earlier mentioned repository and the
current ubuntu icedtea package.

They can be found here: https://launchpad.net/~maarten-
fonville/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

Title:
  icedtea-8-plugin not available for openjdk-8

Status in icedtea-web package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in icedtea-web package in Debian:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
OpenJDK 8 is available in the Utopic repositories, but icedtea-8-plugin does not exist.
I did see that in Debian this 'bug' is known and the new control files etc are already made available in this repository:
  https://code.launchpad.net/~openjdk/openjdk/icedtea-web

Can the icedtea package please be updated and this new package pulled
  into the Utopic repositories?
