Title:
  9.04 Synaptic update doesn't know I have "wrong libc6"

Status in update-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
  information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
  include the following error message:

'E:The package libc6 needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an
  archive for it.'

This is the message Synaptic gave me.

What's happened is I still have libc6 ... 6.1 (which would appear to be out of date)
The package manager is trying to update ... 6.2 (which I should've fetched a very long time ago, I suppose).

  ===================================================================================

I haven't updated this version of Ubuntu for ages, as I realised Hardy
was working fine, and I didn't want the hassle of changing everything.
However, I'm now getting "Kernel Panics" when trying to boot into
Hardy (I think because the bootloader reads its menu.lst from the
Jaunty partition, and I've recently fiddled around with users there,
so I must've inadvertently messed things up). Since Jaunty seemed to
be working just fine, I decided that I would update it after all (200+
files), and just rescue data from Hardy, and move on.
