Yes, 14.04.3 worked, thanks! I installed the "server" version instead of
desktop. Whole-disk encryption enabled.

Bug description:
  I was trying to install ubuntu 14.04.1 desktop amd64 into a VirualBox
  VM. I was using install media ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso with
  md5sum 119cb63b48c9a18f31f417f09655efbd. Host is 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04.3
  LTS desktop. Host is running VirtualBox 4.3.30 r101610.

  I chose to erase and encrypt the hard drive and use LVM. Something
  crashed right after I picked a timezone and US keyboard layout.
