Ubuntu better. We noticed that you were installing the LTS version of
Ubuntu using an older version of the installation media.  The latest
point release of 14.04 is 14.04.3. Please try installing from that
version of the installation media and see if that resolves your issue.

  installer crashes

Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Crashes throughout installation. Restart and it will make it further
  into the install before it crashes again. Says may be caused by a bad
  CD/DVD drive..........tried external drive also. Same thing happens.
